Uber Launches Uber Green, Partners with EV Companies to Boost EV Ride Sharing in India

Uber today launched Uber Green in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru starting from June 2023. Uber Green will allow passengers to request an electric vehicle with zero tailpipe emissions. Uber Green is an on-demand mobility solution for low or zero-emission rides, currently operating in over 100 cities across 15 countries.

The brand also announced a series of partnerships aimed at promoting sustainable transportation in India. These partnerships include Fleet Partner Expansion, EV Two-Wheeler Partnership, Financing and Charging infrastructure.

Under fleet partner expansion, Uber will expand its network of fleet partners to accelerate the growth of EVs on its platform. Lithium Urban Technologies, the largest B2B fleet service provider in India, Everest Fleet Private Limited, and Moove, Uber's global fleet partner, will collectively deploy 25,000 electric vehicles across Uber's top seven cities.

For EV two-wheeler partnership, Uber has collaborated with Zypp Electric, a tech-enabled EV-as-a-service startup, to deploy 10,000 electric two-wheelers by 2024. This collaboration aims to enhance sustainable mobility within Uber's rapidly growing Uber Moto category. Currently, more than 1,000 Zypp Electric two-wheelers are already in use on Uber Moto in Delhi.

For financing, Uber has signed a ‘Memorandum of Understanding’ with the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) to support the purchase of cleaner fuel vehicles, including EVs and CNG. Affordable loans in total of approximately Rs 1000 crores will be provided to facilitate the shift.

For charging infrastructure, Uber has also established two partnerships in the field of charging infrastructure with Jio-bp and GMR Green Energy. Jio-bp will allow Uber drivers to access its charging networks and facilitate the development of new charging infrastructure. The second partnership with GMR Green Energy is to create customised charging facilities.
