The robust domestic sales performance of the passenger vehicle segment along with a hopeful revival of two-wheeler demand has led to a strong start of auto wholesales in FY2025. A total of 2.13 million vehicles were sold in April 2024, which is 25 percent higher compared to 1.71 million vehicles for the same period last year.
A closer look at the data, reveals that while the passenger vehicle performance in percentage terms looks flattish, it recorded the highest ever monthly sales trends. The passenger vehicle segment with 3.35 lakh units sales was able to counter the slowdown in passenger cars segment (-23 percent) on the back of continued demand for SUVs, which grew by 21 percent.
The three-wheeler segment with sales of 49,116 units grew by 15 percent, with demand for goods carrier and passenger carrier driving growth.
The two-wheeler segment on the other hand was the star performer with sales of 1.7 million units saw a robust growth of 31 percent, compared to 1.3 million units sold last year. The growth was seen across scooter segment (+25 percent), motorcycles (+34 percent) and mopeds (+20 percent) respectively.
Vinod Aggarwal, President, SIAM said, “Year 2024-25 has started on a reasonably good note for the Auto industry, as all the segments have posted growth in April 2024, compared to April 2023, driven by positive consumer sentiments and festivities in this month. Above normal monsoon rainfall, policy continuity post-elections and government’s push on manufacturing and infrastructure would propel the overall economic growth which would help in continuing the auto sector’s growth trajectory.”
Rajesh Menon, Director General, SIAM said, “Passenger vehicles continues the highest ever monthly sales trend with 3.36 lakh units, though with a marginal growth of 1.3%, in the month of April 2024, as compared to April 2023. Continuing with the trends of Q4 of 2023-24, Two-Wheelers reported significant growth of 30.8% in April 2024, compared to April 2023, posting sales of about 17.5 lakh units while the three-wheeler segment also reported sales of about 0.49 Lakh units, with a growth of 14.5% in April 2024, compared to April 2023.”
