Scania highlighted its ‘Think big, act small’ approach at the recently held MINExpo in Las Vegas, demonstrating in the process the way it is supporting mining companies in their quest to become more agile, lean and sustainable. 

The Swedish manufacturer displayed the R 620 10x4 mining truck at the exhibition. This mining machine is fully equipped with a sensor system for autonomous operation. It is engineered to offer industry-leading payload efficiency, faster cycle times, low emissions, high safety standards and lower cost per transported tonne compared to other alternatives.  

Powering the truck is a 16.4-litre V8 engine that produces 620 hp of power and 3000 Nm of torque. It is paired to Scania's GRSO905R overdrive Opticruise transmission. 

With a focus on cost and operational uptime, the mining truck adheres to Scania’s philosophy of offering not only the most efficient combustion engines in the industry but also electric and autonomous truck solutions that meet the challenges faced by its diverse pool of customers in different parts of the world.

Of the opinion that the global mining industry is in a transformation process right now, just like so many other sectors, Ekstedt averred, “Our solutions regarding autonomy and electrification are on the brink of a breakthrough in agile mining. Until it really takes off, we also offer the industry’s most sustainable and efficient solutions: the autonomous truck we have on display at MINExpo is a perfect illustration of our capabilities.” 

Stressing that some 12,000 mining trucks of the commercial vehicle major are operational right now, Ekstedt commented, “Being successful in the mining industry takes certain capabilities for suppliers like us,” “But rest assured that with our long experience and our willingness to spend on R&D, we are offering exactly what the industry needs. Basics must be in place, and on top of that we are at the forefront by offering sustainability and the very latest technology within autonomy and electrification for increased payload efficiency per head,” he articulated.

Construction and off-road equipment major SANY has launched what it claims is India's first hybrid off-highway 100-tonne mining dump truck – the SKT130S – with localised manufacturing at its Pune factory.

The truck operates with a 925 kW engine, which generates 3200 Nm of torque, 100-tonne payload capacity and a 61 CuM heaped body capacity, designed for mining applications.

The SKT130S is expected to achieve fuel savings of 20-25 percent compared to conventional mining trucks. A regenerative braking system enables the high-voltage battery to charge during downhill operation.

The truck includes an intelligent control module for operation management and a 10-inch central control screen for navigation and safety. The cabin meets FOPS/ROPS certification standards, aligning with global safety regulations.
